Bonuses, not bidding wars: how to reward a helper who is doing well

In short
Reward a helper who is doing well with discretionary gestures, not a permanent raise: a bonus for a good year, festival money, a paid extra day off, or covering a specific expense. The legal minimum wage is HK$5,220 a month, and paying above it does not buy better work. Generosity lands best when it is flexible, specific and clearly tied to what she did.

A raise is the most expensive kind of generosity, because it never stops. It is owed every month, in every kind of year, and it becomes the baseline the next negotiation starts from. A bonus happens once, when the year has earned it.
Worth saying plainly: paying above the going rate does not buy a better helper. The person does not change because the number did. What changes how someone works is being seen for the work, and that is what a well-given reward does.
What the market actually pays
The legal minimum wage for a foreign domestic helper is HK$5,220 a month for contracts signed on or after 3 October 2026. Many experienced helpers earn above the minimum, but the spread between an ordinary offer and a generous one is narrower than most employers assume.
None of this is an argument for paying less. Pay fairly, and pay on time, every month. The question is where the rest of your generosity does the most good, and the answer is rarely the wage line.
The rewards that land better than a raise
The common thread in what works: it is discretionary, specific, and arrives close to the thing it rewards.
- A year-end bonus for a year that went well. Some families frame it as a thirteenth month; the amount matters less than saying clearly what it is for.
- Festival money at Chinese New Year, which is when her friends are receiving theirs.
- A paid extra day off after a heavy stretch, for example the week you had relatives staying.
- Covering a specific expense: a flight home, a course she wants to take, something for her children.
Each of these can be generous exactly when generosity is deserved, and none of them locks you into a number you have to sustain in a leaner year.
How to give a bonus so it motivates
Say what it is for, out loud, at the moment you give it. "This is because of how you looked after the baby while we were both down with flu" does more than twice the money in a red packet with no words.
Say also, kindly, that it is a bonus and not a raise. Most helpers understand the difference immediately, and the clarity protects you both: she is not counting on it next year, and you have not committed to it.
And remember that money is only half of recognition. Specific, genuine praise costs nothing, and it is the half most employers skip.
Working out the full monthly cost?
The wage is one line of what a helper costs; allowances, insurance and agency fees are the rest. GMA sets out the full monthly cost of employing a helper before you commit, with nothing added later. See our pricing.
