What happens to a domestic helper's visa when she gets a new passport mid-contract?

Her permission to work does not live in the booklet

A new passport does not cancel anything. The employment visa attaches to your domestic helper, not to the document it was stamped in, so a renewal partway through a contract is an administrative matter rather than a crisis. What it does create is a mismatch: Immigration's record still points at a passport she no longer carries, and that gap has to be closed rather than left.

What has to happen

Once the passport is renewed, an application is made for an extension of stay covering the remaining period of the current contract, on the employer's confirmation that the employment is continuing (GovHK). That is the step that brings her permitted stay and her new travel document back into line.

It is not automatic and it is not something that resolves itself at the next renewal. Until it is done, the endorsement and the passport in her hand disagree, which is the sort of thing that surfaces at the least convenient moment.

Passport validity shapes how long she can stay

This is the part employers tend not to expect. A helper must hold a valid national passport, and where that passport runs out before the contract does, Immigration may grant a limit of stay that matches the passport rather than the contract (Immigration Department). A two year contract behind an eighteen month passport can therefore produce an eighteen month permission to remain.

The practical consequence is that a passport nearing expiry is worth dealing with early, before it starts truncating her stay or complicating a renewal you were counting on.

When the mismatch bites

The moments that expose it are the ones with a deadline attached: a contract renewal, a change of employer, or travel. Each involves Immigration looking at her documents together, and each is a poor time to discover the record and the booklet do not agree.
